His father was a furniture mover, and his mother was a homemaker. Gustafsson has an older brother who passed away a decade ago due to heart complications. In 1970, the family relocated to Skövde, where Gustafsson spent his formative years.

From 1975 to 1980, Gustafsson participated in bicycle racing. His comedic career began in the late 1970s when he joined comedian Runo Sundberg's revue in Skövde.
