The actor who played Ed Appel in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Devil in the Dark” was Donald Wayne Beltz, better known by his stage as Brad Weston.

Gene Roddenberry briefly considered Weston for the part of the “young male crewmember to attract teenaged female viewers,” which evolved into Ensign Pavel Chekov, played by Walter Koenig, but was never cast.

A veteran of World War II Weston studied at the Advertising Commercial Art School in Portland, Oregon, from 1948 to 1950.

He then transferred to the Jean Turner School of Commercial Art in San Francisco, California, where he learned painting and commercial art before beginning his career in acting in the early 1960s. He lived from 5th March 1928 – 1999, he was 70 years then.
